The Plane Spotter Network is a home for plane spotters in Aotearoa: a map of good places to watch, built and checked by the people who use them, plus meetups and a community feed. It's also the home of SpotterGO, the phone app that labels the planes above you and lets you catch the ones you can really see.
It started as a hobby project in 2026 and is being built in the open with early testers. Most of it is still in beta, so things will change, and your feedback shapes what comes next.
What we stand for
- Real sightings. A catch means you saw the plane. No catching from the couch.
- Never pay-to-play or pay-to-win. The core game, spots, meetups and friends leaderboards are free for good.
- Community first. Spots belong to the people who find and look after them. We link to and support the wider spotting community rather than compete with it.
- Family-friendly. Green spots, safety-first meetups, and a kids' mode on the way.
Where the data comes from
- Airfields: OurAirports (public domain) and © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).
- Map tiles: © OpenStreetMap contributors.
- Live aircraft positions in the app: community ADS-B feeds, collected by volunteers with receivers on the ground.
- Spots, photos, reviews and meetups: added by our community, under the spot guidelines.
